Sounds very interesting reading... can someone post link?

Some reps are quality enough to be taken as gen until you open them up to see the movement. There's a list on here of great "out of the box" reps if that's your cup of tea.

I can look it up for you if you'd like.

Yeah please do!!!

And as for the original question, yes, close to 100% of the people you bump into will have no clue whether your watch is a rep or a gen. Even if you pop it open for them.

The search feature is your best friend... search and you will find. Plenty of threads on that topic.

I've never worn a rep into an AD, but the fact is most of the people working at the AD don't have a clue - there're just salespeople. The person at one of our local AD's said the He valve on the Omega's was a "heat release valve".

At another AD I was wearing an ESQ crono, and she said "nice Daytona".

Maybe the actual jeweler, but you never see them. The people up front don't really know what they are selling, and might be taught the basics of reps, but probably could only spot Canal St. crap.

Just MHO.

I used to be happy with the el cheapo reps for a hundred clams, but I go for the upper end eta reps now, and yes, even gens.

I've worn my upper end eta reps into AD's, but not the AD's who carry the watch brand on my wrist. That would be crazy. Like I wouldn't go near an Omega boutique wearing even my Sead PO. Mind you I *might* go into a Cartier store wearing my super ulitmate Santos 100 rep.

Regarding the general public, there is that slight chance that there is another WIS out there that can and will out you, especially if you hang around the crowds that like the same things we all do: cars, cigars, watches, etc. but the chances of that are like getting hit by lightning.

There is a certain amount of fear that you will certainly have by wearing a rep (even a very good one) into an AD. This fear will cause you to act in a way that is much more likely to give you away than the watch itself. Regardless of if it makes you act overly shy or especially bold, it will differentiate you from the folks wearing gens because they will do neither... they just act like a person wearing a watch that they don't really think about much.

Even people who know what they are looking for will hardly get a good enough look at a watch on your wrist to begin to know if it's real or not. Try it for yourself... unless it's a quartz Rolex or the like, you'll be surprised how little you can see when looking at someone else's wrist - even when you're trying.

Thanks for typing all that out for me... those are my thoughts as well.

I catch myself looking at some peoples watches and looking for the tells. Unless you are right up on them some of the higher end pieces will pass almost every time.

Oysterquartz were made in the 70's. Yes, most people will only get a fleeting glance at first, but the double take will be a scrutinized look. Still no fear if you are wearing a good rep.
